On a hybrid I usually get around 12mph or so vs around or so on a road bike for the same amount of effort. I would probably buy your road bike used from your local bike shop if you want to save some money, it should still be faster than your hybrid even if it is used. A hybrid bike (sometimes called a cross bike) offers the comfort of an upright riding position with flat handlebars and often a wider seat. With a slightly heavier frame and tires that are wider and more robust than a road bike’s, hybrids handle with more confidence over rougher terrain and on less-than-perfect roads. Wide hybrid tires with a pronounced tread roll slower than typical x23C or 25C road tires, so you’ll gain some speed there. A good road bike will save you as much as pounds over your hybrid (maybe even more, if you buy a top-end model). This weight advantage is most evident on climbs, so you should be a faster climber.
